Well I fixed it. Just for posterity I will state what I did.
After following creolejazz' tip about the widget, I used the info in http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Feeds
I tested the various links and found that the first one - http://example.com/?feed=rss - actually brought up the page to subscribe to my site. I put that link into the widget and bingo! it works.
